"there was violence that evening"
A man has been found guilty of murdering a father who was attacked with an iron rod, mowed down by a car and then run over again when the car reversed.
Navpreet Singh had been celebrating the final day of Diwali with friends at Phoenix Park in Wolverhampton in the early hours of October 22, 2025, when a fight broke out between two groups.
West Midlands Police said the violence was led by Prabhjot Singh and that Navpreet was struck with an iron rod before being deliberately run over by Jashan Singh.
At around 1 am, one of Navpreet’s friends was attacked, prompting the married father to intervene. However, Prabhjot struck him to the ground with an iron rod.
After getting back to his feet, Navpreet approached Jashan’s car and kicked its front headlight, investigators found.
Jashan then drove into him, knocking him to the ground before running over him. He then reversed over Navpreet again before fleeing the scene in his Mercedes.
Navpreet, who was expecting his second child with his pregnant wife, was taken to hospital but died a short while later.
The investigation revealed that Jashan had driven from the scene, off Dudley Road, to a secluded location at an industrial estate in Willenhall.
There, he and another man, Mohit Singh, switched clothes in an attempt to avoid being identified from witness descriptions before driving away.
Jashan subsequently drove near airports in Coventry, Heathrow and Stansted throughout the day, switching SIM cards and phones in an attempt to evade capture.
However, he was arrested in Bicester two days after the murder.
He initially told police he had driven away while Navpreet was still standing but later changed his account, claiming he had been a passenger in the car.
During the trial, Jashan admitted he had been driving but claimed he had accidentally reversed over Navpreet and left the scene without realising what had happened.
On October 26, Wolverhampton Crown Court found Jashan guilty of murder and perverting the course of justice.
Mohit Singh was also found guilty of perverting the course of justice. He had left the country following the murder and was detained at Birmingham Airport when he returned to the UK in January.
Prabhjot Singh was arrested at his home on November 4, 2025, and later pleaded guilty to violent disorder ahead of the trial.

All three men are due to return to court for sentencing on November 30.
Detective Sergeant Rob Moir said:
“Navpreet was a married man with a pregnant wife and not someone who was going out looking for trouble.”
“Sadly, there was violence that evening with Mohit Singh, Prabhjot Singh and Jashan Singh the aggressors.
“Navpreet and his friends were attacked and, tragically, he was not only driven at but then reversed over, leaving him with fatal injuries.
“Jashan Singh knew exactly what he was doing and was intent on causing serious harm. He then drove off and made efforts to avoid being identified and captured.”
